Unwanted Advances

I smelled the old man come up from behind before I saw him. He reeked of cigarette smoke and old cologne. He dressed in a nice blazer and trousers that gave him the look of someone who belonged among the art crowd. But the sleazy steel of his eyes looked dead, and I felt my stomach churn just being watched by him.

“Two beauties among beauty,” the man sneered, looking me up and down.

He stalked to us like a predator cornering kittens. My gut tightened and Professor Evans went rigid before turning to him with a robot smile.

“My dear, you did come after all. I’d like you to meet my student,” Professor Evans said, her voice bright but strained. “Brooke, this is my husband, Victor Cassini, the renowned art critic.”

Cassini puffed out his chest as if he’d just been awarded a medal. “Yes, indeed. I was the one who discovered Barbara here,” he said, his eyes raking over her body as if she were a piece of meat. “Without me, she’d still be painting in obscurity.”

He chuckled, and I felt a rush of anger for her. How could she stand there and let this creep talk to her like that?

“Victor, please,” she said, a nervous edge creeping into her voice. “You know I’ve worked hard to build my career.”

He waved a dismissive hand, brushing aside her words. “Oh, I know. But it’s not just about talent, darling. It’s about who you know.” He turned to me, his gaze narrowing as if he were assessing a new piece of meat. “And marrying me is the best career move she ever made.”

A chill ran down my spine as a flicker of irritation passed over Professor Evans' face.

But she held her composure. “You’ve certainly been supportive, Victor.”

“Supportive?” He let out a bark. “I’m the one who gave you that glowing review that landed you this job at the school. Just in time, too. Any older and they wouldn’t have hired you.”

My blood boiled at the way he spoke to her, his words dripped with condescension.

“I’m just saying, it’s all about finding the right people to keep your career alive, isn’t it?” He leaned in closer to me, his breath reeking of cheap cologne and something rancid.

A conspiratorial smile spread across his face. “You know, Brooke, I could help you take your career to the next level. Why don’t you give me a private showing of some of your works in progress.”

Professor Evans shifted uncomfortably beside me. “Victor, perhaps Brooke doesn’t want to—"

He waved her off dismissively. “Oh, come on. This is the fastest way to the top. You know that, Barbara. Now…”

Cassini pointed toward the stairs leading to the art studio upstairs.

Professor Evans sighed. “Yes, you have some unfinished canvasses upstairs, right?”

Professor Evans took my arm and led the way upstairs. We climbed ahead of Cassini and I felt his gaze burning into my ass.

She leaned close, her voice barely a whisper. “Just bear with it. It will be over soon.”

Inside the art studio, Cassini crossed to the nearest stool and Professor Evans shut the door and locked it.
